Monte Carlo simulation of a sputtering hollow-cathode discharge for laser applications

چکیده
We report on a kinetic model that computes the electron behaviour in a hollow cathode discharge. It is a part of the PLASIMO toolkit and is based on a Monte-Carlo technique. The model is tested by varying the input parameters and by comparing the output with the output obtained by the freeware Boltzmann equation solver BOLSIG+. The results show that the Monte-Carlo model gives reliable information about the behavior of the electrons in the discharge. The Monte-Carlo module is applied to the case of a hollow cathode discharge for laser applications. Analysis of the output data and its adequateness is done. Future developments of the model are discussed.

Hollow Cathode Discharges - Analytical Applications
The low pressure glow discharges considered in this paper are the hollow cathode (Paschen), and the flat cathode (Grimm). Both discharges have similar voltage—current characteristics which are responsible for their radiation stability. The analytical sample is supplied to the discharge through a sputtering mechanism which provides a stable and non-selective source of particles. Some of the fund...
متن کاملMeasurements and modelling of solid phase lithium sputtering
The absolute sputtering yields of D+, He+ and Li+ on deuterium saturated solid lithium have been measured and modelled at 45◦ incidence in the energy range 100–1000 eV. The Ion–surface InterAction Experiment (IIAX) was used to measure the absolute sputtering yield of lithium in the solid phase from bombardment with a Colutron ion source. The lithium sample was treated with a deuterium plasma fr...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of the Cathode Plume of a Hall Thruster
The plasma plume generated by the cathode of a 6-kW laboratory Hall thruster is modeled using a hybrid particle-fluid method. The approach utilizes the direct simulation Monte Carlo method to simulate the collision dynamics of heavy particles, the particle-in-cell method to model the transport of heavy species including the effects of electrostatic fields on the ions, and a “fluid” method that ...
متن کاملPlume Measurement and Modeling Results for a Xenon Hollow Cathode
Behavior of the xenon dispenser hollow cathode is complex, exhibiting high through-anode ion emission, unusual particle energy distributions, and high plume erosion rates. The device may find new application as an ion micro-thruster. A flight-type hollow cathode was characterized using several diagnostic methods. Measurements involved a retarding potential analyzer, quadrupole mass spectrometer...
متن کاملPlume Measurement and Modeling Results for a Hollow Cathode Micro-Thruster
Behavior of the xenon dispenser hollow cathode is complex, exhibiting high ion emission and plume erosion rates, and unusual particle energy distributions. A flight-type hollow cathode was characterized with and without an external extraction electrode. Measurements involved a retarding potential analyzer, quadrupole mass spectrometer, and Langmuir probe. The far-field energy, flux, and charge ...
